The Famous One Piece Manga
One Piece Creator Hospitalized
Manga on Hiatus for Two Issues

This March, One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda took a week off due to a "sudden illness".

On 22nd May 2013, it was announced that Oda has been admitted to the hospital and that the One Piece manga will be on hiatus for two issues.

According to an official Shonen Jump release, Oda has a peritonsillar abscess, which is an infection of the tonsils. WebMD says it's "relatively common in adults" and that it usually happens due
to certain complications that arises due to the progressively worsening of tonsillitis. It can be serious if left untreated.

Treatment is usually a surgical incision and drainage of the pus. Antibiotics are also given for the treatment of the infection, however this infection is known to be penicillin resistant which makes it hard to treat. Thus it is usually treated with clindamycin instead of penicillin

But it is still usually recommended to remove the tonsils and drain the pus via incision and drainage.

Symptoms usually start eight days before the formation of abscess

  • Severe unilateral pain in the throat
  • Pyrexia above 39ºC
  • Unilateral Earache
  • Odynophagia and difficulty swallowing saliva
  • Change in voice — muffled voice, “hot potato” voice
  • Intense salivation & dribbling, Thickened speech,  Halitosis (Bad Breath)
  • Pain in the neck
  • Malaise, Headache, Rigor.
Since Oda is in the hospital, One Piece will not appear in Shonen Jump's May 27 or June 3 issues and that the magazine have apologized to those One Piece fans looking forward to the upcoming manga.

Guess What
You can still look forward in the
June 10 Issue of Shonen Jump

It's expected that Oda will have recovered in time to release the newest One Piece in the June 10 issue of Shonen Jump which is relatively a good news for all readers and fans out there.

In a previous manga interview , Oda once described his usual workday: "I get up at 5am, and I work until 2am. It's normal for me to sleep from 2am to 5am." He added, "I have no days off. If I had them, I'd want to go on vacation with my family. I just want to go outside, it doesn't matter where. See, I don't get out much."
